It was an awesome experience to be part of the US mountain running team for World Championships! Selected based on US Mountain Running Championships in June, the team convened on July 27th in Premana, Italy. Our single race would be held on July 30th, starting off with junior 1-lap races in the morning, followed by the senior women and senior men with 2 laps of a 6.5k loop, for a total of 13k. The first half of my trip to Italy has flown by in a whirlwind of activities! I could have happily spent my whole trip at any one of the places I’ve visited, but that just means I’ll need to come back to see more of each area at a later time. My trip started on July 19th, and I’ll be back to the US on July 31st.
Now that I’m in Premana, Italy, and actually taking a little down time, I have the opportunity to reflect on the first half of the trip. Premana is the venue for the Mountain Running World Championships, which is coming up tomorrow! Continue reading “Italy, part 1”
There were a number of reasons why I wanted to race US Mountain Running Championships this past weekend, instead of going out on my team’s scheduled rollerski and run distance workout. Continue reading “Going for it!”
On January 30-31st, I traveled from Sweden to South Korea to compete for the USA in 3 days of World Cup cross-country ski races. It was exciting and a little surreal to travel to Asia for a weekend of racing. Continue reading “Skiing in Korea!”
After US Nationals in early January, I spent a little time piecing myself together after a somewhat disappointing week, and trying to figure out what races would be next. Continue reading “Opportunity”
It’s a tricky line of work to be in, this professional ski racer business. At the end of the day, we’re judged primarily on the quality of the racing results we produce as individuals, simple numbers on a page of exceptional athletes. Are results always a true reflection of the work done by racer and support staff, the process of getting to the present moment, the potential of a given individual? Continue reading “Reflections and the World Cup”
Week two of my season-starting excursion to Northern Finland took Ida, Pepa and me to Saariselka, Finland. It’s a nice little town way up north, somewhat of a resort town for alpine skiing. During the heart of the winter apparently there are hundreds of kilometers of cross-country skiing trails, but since we’re here at the beginning of the winter, there is only a maybe 7-8k out-and-back segment of trail with manmade snow that has reliable skiing. It won’t be long until they open all the other trails around here, because it just keeps snowing, flurries all day and a considerably accumulation overnight! Sunday morning after the races Ida and I even got out onto the tourist trails which had great natural snow and grooming. Continue reading “Pretty much Russian Championships, in Saariselka”
