November took me from Vermont to Quebec back to Vermont, and now out west to Montana. The start of the race season has arrived, and tomorrow will be the skate sprint Supertour at West Yellowstone. Continue reading “Snippets of November”
Foret Montmorency GRP camp, times 2
My team (the Craftsbury Green Racing Project) ventured north into Quebec in late October and early November, to take advantage of saved-and-rolled-out snow at the Foret Montmorency. We spent Monday through Thursday of two consecutive weeks at “the Foret”, returning to VT in between to compete in the Nensa Elite rollerski race at Trapps. Clean Sport – it’s important!
Hi, sorry everyone for putting up this post with a broken link! Oops! I checked it and discovered that you probably couldn’t see any of the content that I was trying to share…
Really I was trying to send you over to my Facebook athlete page: https://facebook.com/caitlinpattersonskier where I posted a comment on the recent IOC anti-doping decision. I’m bringing my Facebook athlete page into a higher level of activity as we head into winter, so if you’re interested in a wider range of updates, please consider following me there.
Here’s my comment:
“With 100 days to go until the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, the IOC has disqualified two Russian men from the 2014 Olympics and barred them from competing in future Olympics. I’ll be keeping an eye on this story as it develops further, and as the outcome of other related trials are released. It’s disturbing to find out that some athletes in cross-country skiing have likely doped, and have gone so long unpunished. But it reminds me that we must be vigilant, keep looking for ways to support anti-doping testing programs, put pressure on governing bodies to take a stand for clean sport, educate ourselves on progress and pitfalls of the cause, and speak up when we can.
I haven’t spoken much on this politicized topic, but recent news such as this disqualification makes me distinctly aware of how much I value clean sport and all it stands for.
Thank you IOC for taking this step towards preserving clean sport! Let’s keep it going, keep the pressure on, and fight to #CompeteClean and #PlayTrue!
If you haven’t yet, watch Icarus and visit https://fairsport.org/.
I’ll keep looking for ways to support clean sport, and I hope you will too.

Within the past few weeks, another 4 Russian athletes have been suspended by the IOC — and yet because FIS (the international ski federation) has not made their own ruling, at least one of these suspended athletes has been competing in early season races!

Mountain running Worlds – Italy, part 2
It was an awesome experience to be part of the US mountain running team for World Championships! Selected based on US Mountain Running Championships in June, the team convened on July 27th in Premana, Italy. Our single race would be held on July 30th, starting off with junior 1-lap races in the morning, followed by the senior women and senior men with 2 laps of a 6.5k loop, for a total of 13k. Italy, part 1
The first half of my trip to Italy has flown by in a whirlwind of activities! I could have happily spent my whole trip at any one of the places I’ve visited, but that just means I’ll need to come back to see more of each area at a later time. My trip started on July 19th, and I’ll be back to the US on July 31st.
Now that I’m in Premana, Italy, and actually taking a little down time, I have the opportunity to reflect on the first half of the trip. Premana is the venue for the Mountain Running World Championships, which is coming up tomorrow! Continue reading “Italy, part 1”
Training life in mid-June
Last week was a fairly standard summer training week for me in Craftsbury, but that’s not to say it’s boring or without unexpected (and expected) challenges. I realized that if I ever want to write “this is not what I usually do,” in future posts, I might need to outline my idea of usual. Continue reading “Training life in mid-June”
Spring Reflections
It has been my intention to share a few glimpses of my spring even here a little ways after the fact. In the context of this recent running success, it seems particularly appropriate to look back on the April adventures that helped build my current fitness. I believe that the best way to build fitness is to go outside with friends, challenge yourself to develop new skills, cover some human-powered ground, and have fun! Going for it!
There were a number of reasons why I wanted to race US Mountain Running Championships this past weekend, instead of going out on my team’s scheduled rollerski and run distance workout. Continue reading “Going for it!”
Skiing in Korea!
On January 30-31st, I traveled from Sweden to South Korea to compete for the USA in 3 days of World Cup cross-country ski races. It was exciting and a little surreal to travel to Asia for a weekend of racing. Continue reading “Skiing in Korea!”
Woljeongsa temple complex
I just wrote a blog about my trip to South Korea overall which you can find here. That post was becoming a bit unwieldy, so I decided to put a collection of photos from Woljeongsa Temple here as a sideline post instead. Continue reading “Woljeongsa temple complex”
